The Movies
June, 2008
We usually watch a movie on Friday night at our house during the winter. It’s just what we like to do. Our two sons like it so much that they have a hard time adjusting when summer gets here and we don’t do it every week.
Oh, we will if it’s super-hot. We call those “heat” movies.
Or raining. That would be “rain” movies.
Or if we’re all just beat and don’t feel like being outside anyway. Yep, you guessed it. “Blah” movies.
My boys–all three of them–think it’s funny.
I could tell they were going through withdrawals this summer, though, when they started naming reasons to watch a movie–and not just on Fridays, either.

“What’s for supper tonight, honey?” my husband asks. This is a Monday.
“Oh, we’re just going to have a light supper…” I begin.
“Can we have a light supper movie?” asks Ciaran.

“Brr! It’s really cold today,” Orion complains. This is a Wednesday–in June.
“I know,” I reply in sympathy. “It’s only 62 degrees!”
Orion jumps up from his chair. “Can we have a cold movie?!”

“Daddy, I don’t feel very well,” Ciaran says when Daddy gets home from work. This is a Tuesday.
Daddy feels his forehead, gives him a hug, and says, “Well, I guess we need a sick movie tonight.”
Health springs back into Ciaran’s bones. “Really???” he exclaims, excitement shining in his eyes.
If my THREE boys had their way about it, we’d be watching a movie every night of the week. Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on your point of view), we don’t have the budget to rent a movie every single night of the week. Heck, the way prices are going, we don’t even have the budget to rent a movie once a week.
Instead, we resort to watching movies that we have in our own movie library…over and over and over…
And I have to tell ya, I’m getting pretty tired of Star Trek.

Update! Update! Update! At the risk of bodily harm from the hands of my family, one day this month I packed up all the videos and DVDs and stored them away in the attic…
I told ya I was tired of Star Trek.
